As soon as Maria and I arrive at the Sonoma Mission Inn, our “new best friend” Craig pours us some lovely Gloria Ferrer bubbly. What a classy greeting!

Hi, my friends – welcome back to Drink Wine With Dinner®!

I’ve had quite a number of questions about my Sonoma spa getaway last spring – mostly asking whether I’d be doing it again this year.

Well, thankfully, the answer is a big YES! I’m delighted to say that my childhood friend Maria, who still lives in New York, is here in California for a visit. We had so much fun last year on our getaway – wining, dining and indulging at the Sonoma Mission Inn – that we’ve trekked up here again for a few days.

Wouldn’t you know it – when Maria and I hit the Spa area for lunch and lounging, both of us remembered that it was National Piña Colada Day.

As it happened, we’d made our own Piña Coladas the night before, with dark rum (see recipe, below) – and we wanted to check out the Spa version.

We sure weren’t disappointed. Nice, pure pineapple flavor, creamy coconut, and icy, slushy cold.

Maria and I shared hers, along with my bubbly, with our poolside lunch.

I enjoy all kinds of getaways – day trips and overnights, longer trips (and even “staycations”).

But it’s hard to remember anywhere that’s so thoroughly relaxing as this idyllic oasis. As a bonus, it’s only about 25 miles from home – and the “short cut” takes you through some of the most beautiful Wine Country imaginable.

Over the next few days, I’ll be bringing you highlights of our winery visits and restaurant meals as Maria and I enjoy them.

The body-temperature mineral pool. Bliss!

With any luck, this Sonoma getaway will become an annual tradition – which I will definitely continue to share with you!

Here’s my promised Piña Colada recipe. Do try it with dark rum – that caramelly goodness melds so well with the smooooooth coconut!

ROSINA’S RECIPE – PIÑA COLADA (Makes 4 drinks)

Method:
Combine all ingredients with ice cubes or crushed ice in a blender and blend until “slushy.” Pour into glasses, garnish with fresh mint – and enjoy!
